Kindergarten, it is #6|Numbers 1-5, big vs. small, members of family

A bit lost by Chris Haughton

💃5′ activity 1: We have used numbers 1,2,3 a lot during games and storytelling lately, so I introduced numbers 4 and 5 by counting my fingers while pupils repeat them in chorus. Then we sing and dance the song Five Little Ducks by Super Simple Songs. For the purposes of this lesson, I only use audio and not video as I prefer creating our own dance around.

5′ activity 2: I use flashcards to remind pupils of vocabulary such as bird, bear, squirrel, frog, owl from previous books we read (Shh! We Have a Plan and Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?)

👩‍🏫10′ activity 3: We read A Bit Lost by Chris Haughton. I use my owl hand puppet to make it more relatable. We examine the cover and try to guess what happened. Next, we read it, discuss what we liked, at which point we laughed, who helped the little owl. We vote which story we liked most so far. I noticed that it often is the most recent, so we can read it once again.

(🫠Today, while I was reading it for a second time, two children sneakily looked through my bag with my books and edu stuff and were browsing through Shh! We Have A Plan instead of participating in our reading in the circle. I really didn’t mind, on the contrary, I found it really beautiful, although the teacher explained that we do not open other people’s bags.)

⬛️◾️5′ activity 4: We talked about big and small animals. I use flashcards from previous books we read. We play a game where pupils come and touch the right animal e.g. I say ‘Big Frog’ and I hold the two different sized flashcards and the pupil chooses the right one..

Big Frog, small frog

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦5′ activity 5: We talked about mum owl and baby owl, and next, I introduced the words dad, brother, sister. Pupils took turns and talked about how many brothers and sisters they have using expressions such as I have got atwo sisters or just two sisters.

👋5′ activity 5: We borrowed balloons from our teachers and acted out The Finger Family Song. After each section, I pulled a balloon, and pupils said the colour aloud. (I just wished I had more balloons or just to be able to blow them and then play another game with them, but resources are scarce at schools)

👣5′- 10′ We played hopscotch with numbers 1-5 and colours we know. If pupils feel confident, we can add from 1-10. Super fun, super easy! This

I feel that it is better to work in spiral with kindergarten children. In this specific lesson, we reviewed animals and colours while I introduced numbers, big, small, family members, and a beautiful story that they really enjoyed. Along with the teachers, we were impressed how fascinated they are by Chris Haughton’s books. I might use more picture books like those ones in the future with minimal illustrations, one prevalent colour, short texts, and funny moments.
